The dealer, unsure whether the 13 referred to the sonata number or the opus number, sold me both scores; opus 13 is the Pathtique, and opus 13 is Op. 27, No. 1. First contact established! With only three years of study behind me, these two scores initially instilled absolute despair in me, but at the same time further fueled the flame that the Bonn composer himself had first lit in me. Yes, indeed! Beethoven was my first spark. Returning to these sonatas as an adult was like returning for a while to my family home, enjoying once again the delicious dish of Sunday lunch along with the delightful sensation of enveloping fire, enthusiasm, passion, and energy in the paternal embrace of the passing years.
